DVD Release Date: 8th June 2009
Set in 1964 in the Bronx and based loosely on true events, Doubt is a gripping drama about a nun (Meryl Streep) who confronts Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) after suspecting him of abusing a black student at a Catholic primary school.
Sister Aloysius doesn’t have any evidence of these allegations; but her suspisions are aroused when Sister James noticed the Father paying extra attention to the schools first African-American student.
The priest denies the charges but Sister Aloysius is determined to prove Father Flynn’s guilt and sets off on a personal crusade to destroy him.
Our Verdict of Doubt DVD
Drama DVD’s such as Doubt aren’t my favourite genre of film and I had my reservations about the film beforehand but the lack of pace and action are more than made up for by the great dialogue and excellent acting performances by the cast.
The name of the film “Doubt” is indeed an apt name as the film; the script keeps you in a quandary throughout – has Father Flynn abused the boy or he is just guilty of being kind to a boy who doesn’t fit in? Is Sister Aloysius protecting a vulnerable boy or does she disapprove of Father Flynn’s new and radical preaching methods?
The film keeps you guessing right to the end and that is what kept me gripped to the screen.
I rate this film at 3 out of 5 stars for the excellent acting and thought provoking script.
