Notorious tells the true story of American rapper Christopher Wallace (aka the Notorious B.I.G.). Biggie Smalls was a larger than life character that remains one of the greats of hip-hop even after his untimely death.
Biggie started out dealing crack on the streets at the age of 12 and looked destined for trouble; music was his only escape and Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs helped him reach the big time by signing him to his first record deals.
Biggie’s love of women and personal relationships feature heavily in the film which culminates with the momentous east coast-west coast feud.
Our Verdict on Notorious DVD
I have never been a big fan of hip-hop/rap and didn’t know anything about Biggie Smalls before watching the DVD – but overall I found the music enjoyable and the story of Biggie’s life interesting.
The film didn’t focus all of its attention on the music though; the story concentrates more on Biggie’s personal relationships which included singers Faith Evans and Lil Kim. Biggie fans would probably like more music but I thought the balance between the two was first-class.
I would rate Notorious on DVD as 3/5 stars; the story is engaging and the character of Biggie is played exceptionally well by amateur rapper Jamal Woolard. An OK watch for me – a must watch movie for hip-hop fans!
